On July 24, 2025, teleSUR, the multi-platform news outlet founded with the vision of Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, commemorated its 20th anniversary amid warm congratulations from political leaders and social movements across Latin America and the Global South.

Established in 2005 to challenge imperialist media narratives, teleSUR has become a vital tool for amplifying the voices and dignity of peoples long marginalized by mainstream press.

Jorge Arreaza, Vice President of Communal Councils and Communes of Venezuela’s United Socialist Party (PSUV), hailed teleSUR as “the most faithful communications tool for the peoples of Our America and the Global South.”

He underscored that the channel upholds Chavez’s foundational goal to “bring the voice of the majority to the forefront and help transform the world through struggle and truth.” Presidente Maduro’s message also extended praise to Patricia Villegas, teleSUR’s president, and the entire team that has sustained this vital platform through decades of resistance.

The international media network TV BRICS extended heartfelt congratulations to teleSUR on its 20th anniversary, reaffirming the importance of its work in the international media arena. In a message addressed to Patricia Villegas, TV BRICS Director General Janna Tolstikova praised teleSUR as a bastion of independent journalism and a fundamental voice for the Global South.

TV BRICS considers teleSUR a key partner in Latin America, highlighting their fruitful cooperation which has effectively promoted the Global South’s agenda across global media platforms. The expression of solidarity underlines teleSUR’s integral role in advancing international perspectives aligned with sovereignty, dignity, and social justice.

Similarly, Paraguay’s Tekojoja Popular Party of the Guasu Front recognized teleSUR for daring “to challenge the hegemonic discourse” and for its tireless fight against media manipulation and misinformation perpetuated by imperialist corporations. From Asuncion, the party reiterated that teleSUR has been indispensable in paving the way for popular voices to reclaim their rightful space in global communication.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), through the magazine Al-Hadaf, sent a moving message celebrating teleSUR’s unwavering commitment to liberation struggles worldwide.

The PFLP emphasized teleSUR’s role in “portraying reality through the eyes of the Global South” and its enduring solidarity with just causes, including the Palestinian people’s resistance against fascist Zionism and imperialist aggression.

In an expression of gratitude, the Palestinian movement acknowledged teleSUR’s efforts as an essential force standing against misinformation, war, and humanitarian crises such as the genocide in Gaza.

Venezuela’s Minister of Communication and Information, Freddy Nanez, congratulated teleSUR for its professional and courageous work, highlighting the network’s role as “a defense force for the reality of events, bringing the truth where information is under attack and manipulation.” Nanez celebrated teleSUR’s ongoing dedication to rigorous, objective journalism that serves the peoples’ interests, hoping it continues thriving in the years ahead.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry also joined the chorus of praise, recalling that teleSUR represents the realization of Fidel Castro’s and Hugo Chavez’s dream to create “a voice of our own for the Global South, telling our stories with dignity and truth.” Cuba reaffirmed teleSUR’s status as a “beacon of struggle, unity, and informational sovereignty” essential to countering imperialist domination.

The text reads: On Thursday, July 24, on the 20th anniversary of its creation, the multi-platform news outlet #teleSUR continues to receive congratulations from various organizations and political figures from Latin America and the Global South.

Two decades on, teleSUR stands as a testament to the power of independent media rooted in socialist principles and internationalist solidarity. Its work continues vital in a world where capitalist media conglomerates seek to silence or distort the realities of oppressed peoples.

Celebrations across Latin America and the Global South reaffirm teleSUR’s indispensable role as a platform that lifts up the voices of liberation, resistance, and hope for a just and sovereign humanity.
